The short version
WeatherSignal is a weather and planning app operated by Matt Buttrick, under Garnet Ledger. This policy covers WeatherSignal and the privacy and support forms on this website.
WeatherSignal uses location information to provide forecasts, account information when you use an account, and notification information if you enable alerts. It also records limited usage and diagnostic information to help operate and improve the app. We do not sell your personal information.
Information we collect
- Locations & preferences
- Saved location names and coordinates, forecast and alert preferences, and your current coordinates when you choose to use current location. Saved locations may be synchronized with the service so it can monitor forecasts and alerts.
- Account information
- If you use account features, your email address, account or profile identifier, authentication information, and associated settings. Passwords are not stored as plain text.
- Notifications
- If you enable push notifications, an Apple push notification device token and the settings needed to deliver your selected weather alerts.
- Usage & diagnostics
- App events such as opening screens or changing preferences, timestamps, installation and session identifiers, and limited technical information used to investigate failures and understand how features are used. Events may be associated with a profile identifier; this information is not necessarily anonymous.
- Messages you send us
- Your reply email address, optional name, request type, message, and any device, operating system, or app version information you choose to include in a support request.
- Website traffic
- Our hosting and network services process connection information, such as IP addresses and request metadata, to deliver and protect this website. The form service temporarily uses a coded version of the connecting IP address to limit repeated submissions.
How we use information
- Provide local forecasts, briefings, saved locations, and planning information.
- Deliver the weather notifications you enable.
- Maintain accounts, synchronize settings, and keep the service working.
- Investigate errors, understand feature use, and improve reliability.
- Respond to support and privacy requests, verify that a request relates to you, and protect the service from abuse.
Services involved in delivering the app
Information is shared with service providers as needed to deliver features and operate the service:
- Weather services: location information is used to request relevant forecasts and observations, including from the U.S. National Weather Service and, where enabled, Synoptic.
- Apple: Apple Push Notification service delivers notifications to devices that have opted in.
- Traffic and incidents: when you view nearby incidents, the coordinates and search radius for your selected area are sent to OpenWeb Ninja, which provides Waze traffic data.
- Radar: RainViewer supplies radar imagery. Radar tile requests identify the map area being displayed.
- AI forecast discussions: when AI-written discussions are enabled, forecast context, including the selected location, may be sent to OpenAI to generate a discussion.
- App hosting: the WeatherSignal API runs on Render. Its request logs may include IP addresses and the coordinates requested.
- Website hosting and network services: our server infrastructure and Cloudflare process information needed to serve and protect this website and its forms.
We may also disclose information when required by law or to protect the rights and security of users and the service. We do not sell personal information or use this website for advertising tracking.
Storage, security & retention
App information is kept for as long as needed to provide the features you use, maintain the service, investigate problems, and meet legal obligations. Saved locations and settings are retained while they remain associated with your profile. Diagnostic records may be retained for troubleshooting and operational analysis. Retention depends on the type of record and why it is needed.
You can remove saved locations in the app. For account and associated data deletion, see account deletion below or use the privacy request form. We will explain any information that must be retained when responding to a verified request.
Messages submitted through this website are kept while a request is open and automatically removed from the form inbox 180 days after the request is marked resolved. Email correspondence may be retained as needed to document the response and meet legal obligations.
Connections to this website use HTTPS. Access to submitted messages is restricted to the private owner inbox. We use access controls and other reasonable safeguards, but no service can guarantee absolute security.
Your choices & requests
- Location: change WeatherSignal’s location permission in your device’s Settings. You can use saved locations instead of sharing your current location.
- Notifications: change notification permissions in Settings, and adjust alert preferences in the app.
- Saved information: remove saved locations or change preferences in the app.
- Privacy requests: ask for access, correction, or deletion, or ask a question using our privacy request form. The rights available may depend on where you live.
Account deletion
If your version includes in-app account deletion, open Profile → Account → Delete Account and confirm.
A successful in-app deletion permanently removes your account and its linked profiles, saved locations, alert settings, notification registrations, and usage events associated with those profiles.
If you do not see that option, or deletion does not complete, use the privacy request form. We may need to verify your identity before carrying out a request submitted through the form.
Use the email associated with your account when possible. We may need to verify your identity or authority before sharing or deleting information. Sending the form starts a request; it does not immediately delete an account. We will reply by email with any next steps. Please do not send passwords, payment information, or identity documents through the form.
Cookies on this website
The public pages and forms do not use advertising or analytics cookies. A strictly necessary session cookie is used only when the owner signs in to the private request inbox. We do not save form drafts in your browser.
Children’s information
WeatherSignal is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact us so we can review and address it.
Updates & contact
We will post policy updates on this page and change the effective date. If a change materially affects how personal information is handled, we will provide an additional notice where required.
